Quad Bike Operation

SOP-ATV-001

About this Document

The Quad Bike Operation SOP (SOP-ATV-001) addresses critical hazards associated with quad bike use, including rollover risks, loss of control, and environmental dangers. This document is essential for workplaces utilizing quad bikes, ensuring compliance with the Work Health and Safety Act and promoting safe riding practices. By following this SOP, operators can minimize the risk of accidents and enhance overall safety in the workplace.

Hazards & Risks Covered

  • Rollover / crush — quads have a high centre of gravity; rollover crushing the rider is the leading cause of quad fatalities in Australia
  • Loss of control on slopes, in ruts, or at speed → ejection, collision, fatality
  • Carrying a passenger or child — quads are designed for one operator only; passenger use causes loss of active-riding control
  • Strike of fixed objects, fences, or trees in poor visibility or fatigue
  • Drowning in dam, creek, or flooded crossing
  • Mechanical entanglement with attached implements (sprayer, slasher, trailer)
  • Exhaust burns and fire from hot engine in dry grass
  • Sun, heat, and dehydration on long remote rides
